10U Guidelines

10U Guidelines:

Between ages 9-12, termed the "golden age" for learning, AYSO's 10U program embodies adventure. Here, players absorb new teachings with innovative Player Development. Coaches now tackle goalkeeping and offside, signaling a shift towards full-sided play. Our approach must evolve to match, prioritizing preparation and organization for a seamless experience.

  • Halfway line spans the width, equidistant between goal lines.
  • Center circle with an eight-yard radius.
  • Corner arcs with a one-yard radius at each corner.
  • Goal area in front of each goal measuring 6 × 15 yards.
  • Penalty area in front of each goal measuring 14 x 30 yards.
  • Penalty mark ten yards from the goal line.
  • Penalty arc extending in an eight-yard radius from the penalty mark.
  • Buildout Line: the line halfway between the edge of the center circle and the penalty area.

Goals: Maximum height of 6' 6" and width of 18' 6".

Ball: Size 4 ball used for 10U games.

Coach: Emphasize positive coaching. No sideline yelling. Coaches not allowed on the field during games. No coaching while refereeing.

Players: Maximum of 10 on roster, with seven on field; one goalkeeper.
Goalkeeper may NOT play 2 consecutive quarters in goal. Goalkeeper must play at least one quarter on the field. Substitutions between quarters, at halftime, and for injuries. Minimum two quarters playing time per game for each player. No player shall play four periods until everyone has played three.

Player Equipment: As part of the registration fee, each player receives a full uniform (jersey, shorts, socks) which your coach will give to you prior to the start of the season.
In addition, you will need to supply the following items:
- Shin guards (mandatory for all practices and games)
- Size 3 soccer ball (highly recommended)
- Soccer shoes (These shoes may not have a toe cleat. Tennis shoes are ok.)
- Water bottle (great for those hot August days)

Duration of Game: Two 25-minute halves. Halves end when the ball goes out of play after 25 minutes. Halftime break of 3-5 minutes. Total game time 60 minutes including breaks.

No Punting & No Heading in this division. Indirect free kick awarded if a player intentionally heads the ball. Offside rule is in effect from the Buildout Line. Indirect free kick awarded from where the infraction occurred.

Fouls & Misconduct: Opponents must be 10 feet from the ball on restart kicks. Referees work cooperatively with coaches to avoid cautions/send-offs. Indirect free kick means the ball must be touched by another player to score a goal.

Referee: AYSO certified Regional Referees or higher required for U-10. Referees briefly explain infringements and encourage proper play. Positive comments made to both teams. Effort made to keep the game moving.

Assistant Referees: Qualified assistant referees may assist if available. This provides opportunities for new assistant referees to gain experience.
